ABOUT Abaca
Abaca is a natural fibre produced by a small artisan community in a remote part of the Philippines. Their workshop sits in the foothills of a live, conical volcano, where the volcanic soil is rich in nutrients and the abaca plant grows naturally in abundance.
A close relation of the banana plant, Abaca is indigenous to the Philippines and is sometimes known as Manila hemp.
The fibres are taken from the trunk of the plant and harvested entirely by hand using machetes. As the fibres move from the centre of the trunk towards the outer bark, they become gradually darker and more textured. These fibres are then hand sorted into fine, medium and coarse grades.
The finest fibres are used for lighter, more refined finishes, the medium for more textural applications, and the coarsest fibres for rugs.

A FIBRE THAT WORKS HARD
Abaca is exceptionally durable. It is stronger than sisal, yet softer in feel.
Unlike sisal, it can tolerate moisture, making it suitable for bathrooms and other humid spaces. In warmer climates, it has also been used successfully in covered outdoor areas and beach houses.
